5 Common Conditions Treated with Shoulder Arthroscopy

Shoulder arthroscopy is a surgical procedure that allows surgeons to diagnose and treat various shoulder problems. This minimally invasive procedure involves making small incisions in the shoulder and inserting a small camera, called an arthroscope, to provide a clear view of the joint. The surgeon can then use specialized instruments to repair or remove damaged tissue. Shoulder arthroscopy is a safe and effective treatment for various shoulder conditions. Here are five common conditions that can be treated with shoulder arthroscopy.

Rotator Cuff Tear

A rotator cuff is a set of muscles and tendons surrounding and helping stabilize the shoulder joint. A rotator cuff tear happens when one or more of these tendons tear. This can cause pain, weakness and limited mobility. Shoulder arthroscopy can repair the tear by reattaching the tendon to the bone.

Shoulder Impingement Syndrome

Shoulder impingement syndrome occurs when the rotator cuff tendons become inflamed and irritated as they pass through a narrow space between the bones of the shoulder. This can cause pain, weakness and limited mobility. Shoulder arthroscopy can be used to remove any bone spurs or other structures that are causing the impingement.

Shoulder Instability

Shoulder instability occurs when the shoulder joint is too loose, and the upper arm bone (the humerus) ball can slide around too much within the socket. This can cause pain, weakness and a feeling of instability. Shoulder arthroscopy can be used to tighten the ligaments and other structures that hold the shoulder joint together.

Frozen Shoulder

A frozen shoulder occurs when the tissues surrounding the shoulder joint become thick and stiff, making it difficult to move the shoulder. Shoulder arthroscopy can be used to release tight tissues and restore mobility to the shoulder.

Labral Tear

The humerus ball is held in place by the labrum, a ring of cartilage that surrounds the shoulder socket. A labral tear can occur when this cartilage is torn, often due to a shoulder dislocation or other injury. Shoulder arthroscopy can be used to repair the tear by reattaching the labrum to the socket.
