You depend so much on your back in everyday life. When you are in pain from lumbar compression, it is difficult to perform normal tasks, which can rob you of your quality of life.
Lumbar Compression Causes
Lumbar compression is caused by conditions that put pressure on the lumbar region of the spinal cord. Degenerative disc disease, Rheumatoid arthritis, herniated disks or bone spurs can all lead to lumbar compression. Spinal compression can happen to anyone. Sports injuries, accidents and improper lifting practices can lead to this condition. Scoliosis, infection and spinal tumors can also lead to this type of compression. It can also be caused by osteoarthritis, or the simple wear and tear that comes with age.
Symptoms
Lumbar compression symptoms can come on suddenly, or can build gradually over time, depending on the cause. The symptoms of lumbar compression are varied, but the most common symptoms are:
- Pain and stiffness
- Pain that radiates down the legs, or spreads to arms or buttocks. This condition is known as sciatica.
- Numbness or weakness in extremities
- Weakness in feet that can lead to limping
- Changes in range of motion
- Loss of bowel or bladder control
Lumbar Compression Diagnosis
If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, your doctor will complete a physical exam and ask you about your medical history. They will check for signs of compression, including abnormal reflexes, loss of sensation or the location of the pain. Diagnostic tests will also be performed, including x-rays of your spinal column. Your doctor may order a CT scan or an MRI to get a better look at the area. If necessary, a bone scan or an electrical test called an electromyography may be ordered.
Lumbar Compression Treatments
There are treatment options that can ease symptoms and correct the condition. These treatments include:
- Anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs)
- Steroid injections to reduce inflammation and swelling
- Physical therapy
- Surgical treatments to widen the space between vertebrae or remove bone spurs
